  • Overview

    The Buyer is responsible for timely, efficient, ethical, and cost effective negotiation and purchasing for material and services.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    • Responsible for placing purchase orders and managing inventory for each category within the buyer scope. Follows up on orders and status to ensure quality and on-time deliveries. Coordinates the transfer of all centrally purchased items to other JBSS facilities. Maintains Excel Vendor Deficiency Log (SQF Requirement). 
    • Participates in sourcing and negotiation for items within the buyer, senior's scope to ensure interrupted supply and competitive pricing under the direction of the VP, procurement.
    • Coordinate purchasing activities with other departments to insure proper inventory levels are maintained.
    • Collaborates purchasing activities with other departments on new item and sample requests.
    • Ensures contracts with vendors are documented and consistent with corporate objectives.
    • Work on special projects and assignments as necessary.
    • Responsible for manufacturing, distributing and consistently maintaining safe and quality food by following good manufacturing practices, allergen controls, food defense, HACCP, SQF and regulatory requirements.
    • Aware and accountable for maintaining and documenting preventative controls necessary to ensure food safety and quality.
    • Responsible for immediately reporting all food safety and quality issues to management.
    • Responsible for partnering with others, sharing knowledge, skills and information within assigned team and across functional areas.
    • Responsible for enhancing technical and functional competencies, as well as professional and leadership development.


    • Bachelor's degree in a business discipline required.
    • Three to five years of experience in purchasing required.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
    • Packaging and ingredients industry experience preferred.
    • Quality planning skills and ability to work with other departments necessary. 
    • Strong analytic and organizational skills.
    • Computer skills with Microsoft Office applications necessary.


    Job Specific Requirements:


    In the event that the buyer, senior is absent, the department manager is responsible for providing an equally qualified person to cover this position.
